Seekbuster Here’s the short version of what’s going on.
I got my EVH in 1995. I played the hell out of it and over the years, I’ve had several re-frets. On the last re-fret, I had a bit of fret sprout, so I brought it to someone to file down the edges a bit. I’ve had this done many times with no issues, but the person who did the filing decided to use this new tool specifically made for this purpose. This tool has a preset angle used for dressing frets and unfortunately that angle was totally wrong for my neck and he accidentally took the frets down too much and took off some of the neck wood along with it. It was an accident, all is forgiven…stuff happens. I brought this guitar back to my normal guitar repair guy and he told me the neck needed new frets again. He put the new set on, but now the guitar neck has gone through so much trauma that it feels totally different. The frets feel huge now because there’s really not enough room to properly roll the frets down. We’re afraid to dress the frets anymore because it looks like if we take anymore off, the E-string will slide right off. The guitar is just not as fun to play as it used to be. This is heartbreaking because this guitar was definitely my favorite and it had the greatest neck I’ve ever played.
I’m really at a loss here. Can you guys think of any way I can save this guitar?
